8 Types of Man Selfies

Right this moment, in homes, restaurants, conference rooms, and tourist attractions across the world, there is a good chance that someone, somewhere, is taking a selfie. In 2014, it was estimated that more than one million selfies were taken and shared on social media each day.

More than just a photo of yourself, I’d like to suggest that, like dreams, each selfie tells a larger story. Based on my experience as a researcher with a Ph.D. in Psychology and Doctorate of Education, here is a look at some of the more typical selfies – particularly those taken by men – and what they might mean.

8 Types of Man Selfies and What They Mean

1. Gym Selfie
A gym represents energy, youth, and vitality. Unconsciously, you often reach for just that kind of person, because biologically you are looking for a good father for your children, and he’s telling you that he’s a candidate.

2. Shirtless Selfie
Usually taken in the bathroom at home, be careful with this one! You may have a peacock on your hands, and if he looks in the mirror more than you do, he may not be your best choice.

3. Car Selfie
Culturally, we see cars as a power symbol and a sexual symbol, so this guy is giving out that come-hither vibe.

4. Locker Room/Club Selfie
If it’s taken in a locker room, he may be telling you he’s one of the boys. If it’s taken in a club, he may be trying to impress you with his clubby status. Usually, when someone tries to impress you like that, you might take a look at his polar opposite, or shadow, and consider that he may be insecure.

5. Selfie With a Dog
This is a wonderful one. Dogs are a real come-on for many women, like babies at the airport. They are babe magnets and men often attach themselves to pets to reveal the softer side of themselves and to reach the softer side of you.

6. Funny Face Selfie
This may be a sign of immaturity. I’d really think twice before I engage with someone who acts out publicly in such a childish manner… unless he’s using humor because he’s just feeling awkward and unsure of himself.

7. Friend Selfie (or “Ussie”)
Many times when we are uncomfortable, we bring in a buddy for support. I think this kind of selfie can be charming, and it lets you know he’s a friendly guy.

8. Thumbs Up Selfie
This is a nice selfie of a man who appreciates life and the fullness of life, recognizing that nature and stress-free environments are important to him, as opposed to just a material life.
